🥋 Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

📘 General Questions

What is Math Dojo?

Math Dojo is a structured mathematics enrichment programme for learners in Grades 1–4. It uses proven Japanese Soroban and Flash Anzan methods to strengthen number sense, mental calculation, focus and confidence.

Math Dojo does not replace school mathematics. It develops the cognitive skills behind mathematics — helping children understand, visualise, and work with numbers more confidently.

Who can join Math Dojo?

Math Dojo is currently offered to learners in Grades 1–4.

The programme benefits:

• Learners who need stronger foundations
• Learners who lack confidence in maths
• Learners who want to improve speed and focus
• High-performing learners who want to sharpen their mental skills

Does Math Dojo replace school maths classes?

No.

Math Dojo does not reteach classroom lessons or replace the CAPS curriculum.

Instead, it strengthens the thinking skills behind mathematics, helping learners cope better with classroom learning.

🧮 About the Method

What is Soroban?

Soroban is a traditional Japanese abacus used to develop strong number sense and structured calculation skills.

When learners use the Soroban, they physically build numbers by moving beads. This helps them:

• Understand place value clearly
• See how numbers combine and separate
• Reduce reliance on finger counting
• Develop structured calculation habits

Over time, learners begin to visualise the Soroban mentally and calculate without writing anything down.

They understand what numbers are doing — rather than simply memorising steps.

What is Flash Anzan?

Flash Anzan is a mental training method where numbers are briefly shown and learners calculate them mentally.

This develops:

• Working memory
• Focus and concentration
• Processing speed
• Mental discipline

It strengthens confidence and fluency when handling numbers.

How Does This Help in the South African Context?

Many learners struggle with mathematics not because they lack ability, but because foundational number sense was not fully developed.

Common challenges include:

• Finger counting
• Weak place value understanding
• Slow mental calculation
• Low confidence
• Difficulty keeping up with classroom pace

Soroban and Flash Anzan strengthen these foundations, making CAPS mathematics easier to understand and apply.

💰 Fees & Registration

What are the monthly class fees?

The monthly class fee is R350 per learner per month.

This is currently offered as an introductory rate.

Is there a school partnership discount?

Yes.

Math Dojo has a venue partnership agreement with Laerskool Goedehoop, as the school provides the facilities for classes.

As part of this agreement, learners from Laerskool Goedehoop receive a R50 monthly discount.

Please note that the partnership agreement exists solely between Math Dojo and Laerskool Goedehoop, and the discount applies only to learners enrolled at Laerskool Goedehoop.

Is there a registration fee?

Yes.

A once-off registration fee of R500 is payable upon enrolment.

This includes the full beginner starter pack:

• Soroban (Japanese abacus)
• Stationery and bookbag
• CAPS workbook (one workbook per grade for the entire year)
• Soroban / Flash Anzan workbook
• There are NO admin fees.

Are there additional workbook costs?

Possibly, depending on progress.

• CAPS workbook – Only one workbook per grade (included in registration).
• Soroban / Flash Anzan workbooks – There are 4 books per level.

One level typically corresponds to one academic year, but progression depends on the individual learner.

Because classes are small, learners progress at their own pace. Some may move faster, while others may take more time.

Additional workbooks are available at R150 per book, as required.
